Mythic Name Hack

Filed under Downloads > Hacks on December 09, 2005

Jenba wanted to know how I had modified my Sim files to change townie names, so I'm going to share how you can change a file so that all new npcs and townies will have their names pulled from that file.

This file is heavily edited from the Maxis one. I removed all excess arrays and have added several strings to all the name categories. There are four arrays from which townie names are pulled: Male Names, Female Names, Male Last Names and Female Last Names. Even though Female Last Names was only introduced in University I'm confident this file will not conflict with the base game because it can't overwrite or effect something that is not there, the game will just ignore it.

The file contains a collection of names from fairy tales, folktales and mythology both ancient and modern from all over the world. It includes Japanese, Norse, Egyptian, Celtic, French, German, Roman, Greek, Indonesian, Iranian, African and British names from their myths and legends. It also has names from the Lord of the Rings and several from Harry Potter, including two that are really there more as joke and homage then anything. I even threw in a few Disney names, though nothing very obvious. Then I went back and rounded it out with a few personal favorites, the names of some flowers and precious stones, and some street names even.

Now I offer it to the lot of you to mangle as you see fit.

Take this file, unzip it. Open Live.package using Sim PE (download it here). There will be four arrays to choose from. Select one and then select the tab "Plugin View". Like so. They are all labeled under File Name as to what they contain.

From here you simply can choose to delete a string you don't like by selecting it and clicking "Delete Sting". Edit it by selecting the string and changing the text in the String box. Or, add a new string with an additional name you want by clicking "Add String" and then entering text into the String box. More names means fewer repitions. This file already contains several more strings then the Maxis default did. Once you are finished with an Array click "Commit File". If you are done editing the file, don't forget to save (File > Save).

Once you have the file the way you want, drop it anywhere you like (subdirectory or on the root) in your Sims 2 Downloads directory.

If you want to create a new neighborhood with the new custom names you are going to need to add a college (and a downtown I'm assuming) then from the neighborhood use the cheat "deleteallcharacters". The reason for this is that the townies in the default neighborhood are pulled from Pleasantview every time a new neighborhood is created, names and all.

The reason for this, I think, is an attempt by Maxis to keep the townie names alive as they were originally set up. If you look in the credits at the list of people who worked on the Sims 2 you will see every one of those townie names listed right there, yes, even Goopy.

Once you have whiped and regenerated new townies (either by letting the game do it on the fly as needed, or by using boolprop and right clicking on the mailbox to regenerate the new townies) you should have a neighborhood full of townies named by you.

Awesome! Thanks so much for sharing that with us. It sounds a little scary, but I'm eager to try it out. :-)
