Read-a-Thon April 2010

I’m the only person up right now and I’m trying to be vewy vewy quiet. We’re hunting books today! Or at least I am. It’s almost 7AM and I’m reading to kick off by starting with Volume 1 of Fullmetal Alchemist. You may have heard me rave about this series in my upcoming read-a-thon post. I am stoked and so ready to go. I’ve been leafing through these babies all week!

Let’s get this party started!

Hour 2

Wow, that first hour went by fast! So far I’ve managed get out of bed, fix myself a cup of tea, and crack open my first book. I’m now 100 pages in and loving it! Now for some mini-challenges before hitting the books again!

Mini Challenge Hour 1

Where are you reading from today?

I’m currently reading Fullmetal Alchemist Volume 1. Embarrassingly enough it’s been so long since I’ve read a manga that I keep catching myself moving onto the wrong page or the wrong frame and having to check myself and re-read to make sense of the story. 100 pages later and I think I’m back into the swing of things now!

3 facts about me …

1. I love to drink tea!
2. Despite how quickly I am chomping through this manga I do not consider myself a fast reader.
3. Normally I can’t stand gory books, movies or TV shows. Fullmetal is one of very few exceptions, the plot is that good!

How many books do you have in your TBR pile for the next 24 hours?

I have several books out to choose from in case I get bored. I have the Fullmetal Alchemist manga (22 books), an omnibus of 5 short books called Dangerous Angels, a book of short stories called Love Begins in Winter, I have a few chapters left of A Reliable Wife and three full length books besides.

Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, or number of comments on blogs)?

My main goal is to finish this manga if at all possible! I hope to also be up for the full 24 hours, I managed to succeed when I did the “read. read. read-a-thon!” in December but I have no illusions that it won’t be just as hard this time!

If you’re a veteran read-a-thoner, Any advice for people doing this for the first time?

Once you start getting tired don’t drink lots of coffee or soda. Your system will crash hard. Let your natural circadian rhythm work, you will wake back up soon if you have patience. If it’s really bad have a cup of lightly caffeinated tea or hot chocolate. Not as hard of a crash that way.

Hour 3

Yay! I finished my first book! I had a lot of fun with it and can’t believe I completely forgot about the cute cartoons at the end, and the “In Memoriam” for the people that died in that book. People always die in these books, it never fails, but you find out why later and it makes perfect sense.

Hour 4

I’m over half way through Volume 2 of Fullmetal Alchemist. I don’t remember the plot reveal on the history of alchemy being so awkward. Really, who talks about the tenants of alchemy mid-fight? Other than that really enjoying the story, and especially the humor! I forgot how laugh out loud funny these books were from time to time. With how heavy the plot is you need to comic relief.

Mini Challenge Hour 4

Come up with a sentence using book titles off of your shelves. Take a picture of it.

Dangerous Angels Catching Fire, In The Bleak Midwinter

Mini Challenge Hour 2

Talk about what I’m surrounding myself with for this read-a-thon. Take a picture of it.

I am sitting in my super comfy reading chair, complete with easter bunny and that huge stack of books is my TBR pile for the day! I’m not getting through it, but at least I have it to hand so if I get bored of what I’m reading I can easily switch to something else.

My strategy is basically to sit and read, and enjoy a cup of tea. I did not make any plans for food! I haven’t eaten yet today either and I know that’s not good. I’m going to be starving before too long. Until then I do have a basket of easter candy at hand…

Hour 5

I finished Volume 2 of Fullmetal Alchemist and I am starving! I wanted to get something to eat but it turns out we need to go shopping and my husband still hasn’t woken up yet. So I’m not sure what I am going to do about that. In the meantime the mini-challenges this hour certainty didn’t help me at all in the hunger department!

Mini Challenges Hour 5

Quote from a section of your book that talk about food. Post a picture of the food. I’m going to kill two birds with one stone and post a picture of the pages of the manga with the pictures of the food!

Here are a few frames from back in the second half of volume 1 of the manga I am currently reading. In the story poor Edward is starving and has been kicked out of an inn for being a state alchemist, his brother is a civilian and managed to get some food, even though he is just a soul attached to a suit of armor! I bet the innkeeper didn’t know that though.

Remember, this is a manga so you have to read the frames and speech bubbles from right to left NOT left to right.

For the second mini-challenge we are supposed to pick a song to go with the book we are currently reading and say why we chose it.

For the manga Fullmetal Alchemist I went with the song It’s Not a Fashion Statement, It’s a Deathwish by My Chemical Romance. Alphonse’s suit of armor and Edward’s automail are not fashion statements! Neither are the outfits the Sins wear. The song talks about avenging and about how “the grave you put me in wasn’t deep enough”. And, you’ll find out later where the Sins Envy, Lust and Gluttony come from and that part of the song can be interpreted to tell their story exactly. It’s kind of freaky! Anyway, here’s the song:

Hour 6

He finally woke up! My husband that is. We went shopping and ate lunch (I had some very delicious spaghetti, jealous?) so I didn’t get much reading done. Still I am very happy with a full stomach and ready to get started on reading again!

Well, I finished eating and even managed to get dressed this hour! I’m feeling accomplished. I’m about half way through Volume 3 of Fullmetal Alchemist and wondering if I might want to take a break and switch books soon. I might go and finish up A Reliable Wife or crack open Dangerous Angels. I haven’t decided yet. Still feeling pretty good though. I was a little sleepy after eating lunch but changing out of my warm fuzzy pjs helped snap me out of that!

Mini Challenge Hour 7

So this hour’s mini-challenge is to write about something #pantyworthy. I don’t often get a chance to just rave about my favorite series so I shall commence with the raving!

I love Jane Austen, and I particularly love reading Jane Austen spinoffs. I’ve read lots of them and some are great, some are not so great and some are downright awful.

But, there is one series that you must read if you are only going to read just one Jane Austen spinoff. It is the best. By far. In fact it is so good you could read on its own without reading the Jane Austen novel before it and it would be wonderful to read. It is that good!

The series is Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman by Pamela Aidan and it made up of three books: An Assembly Such as This, Dute and Desire and These Three Remain.

Seriously.

Even if you don’t like Jane Austen, but do for some inexplicable reason like regency era historical novels, then you will love these books. Even if you don’t like any other Jane Austen spinoff you have ever read, you will love these books. Even if you have never read Pride and Prejudice, you will love these books. They are so very, very, very #pantyworthy!

Go. Read. Now!

Hour 8

Yay, I finished reading my third book! I also have decided to finish the first five books in the Fullmetal Alchemist series before moving on to maybe take a break with something else. Sounds good, no? I’ve gone back to snacking on easter candy and I think I’m making myself a little sick on it. There is none left save for one (now earless) chocolate bunny. So good.

I think I’m getting back into the swing of things after my lunch crisis deviation. Of course, now I’m hungry again. I hate my metabolism sometimes. Slow down! So now I’m making mac and cheese and hot dogs, hopefully that will hold me over for a little while. In the mean time I’m nearly half way through volume 4 of Fullmetal Alchemist. It’s picking up and getting good, but I’m also a little leery because I know this one is going to be a real tear jerker. I have the tissues ready.

Mini Challenge – Hour 12

Mid-Event Survey:

1. What are you reading right now?

Fullmetal Alchemist Volume 5

2. How many books have you read so far?

Four!

3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?

Dangerous Angels by Francesca Lia Block

4. Did you have to make any special arrangements to free up your whole day?

Saturday is normally just cleaning day for me so I had to reschedule for tomorrow. Between catching up on sleep and chores tomorrow is going to be a busy, busy day!

5. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?

Sometimes I tried to tote my book around with me, but really things went much faster if I just did the cooking/cleaning/errands I needed to do and got it done as quick as possible so that I could get back to reading.

6. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?

This read-a-thon seems a lot quieter than the one I did in December. Much fewer comments this time around, a lot of people busy with reading I guess! Especially since we are now in the afternoon stretch.

Edit: Wanted to clarify this now that I don’t have half of my head in a book. The number of participants is, like, triple what it was for the last read-a-thon I did in December. I honestly think the cheerleaders are doing a great job, and just are all around really amazing especially with how many people signed up to read for this! My last read-a-thon had no cheerleaders so I think, as readers, we felt like we needed to cheer each other on so there was a lot more flow of conversation. I’m actually glad that I don’t have to worry about that this time around and can just concentrate on reading if I want to. Having less of a flow of conversation (a two way street!) has to be sacrificed though if you want that, and so that is a difference that I noticed from that read-a-thon to this one.

7. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year?

Start from Hour 0, counting Hour 1 means the final post will be Hour 25, that’s just confusing. Also, ask the mini-challenge hosts to say what “hour” it will close at, not say “it will close at 6pm!” which doesn’t necessarily mean anything to a participant.

8. What would you do differently, as a Reader or a Cheerleader, if you were to do this again next year?

Update every two hours instead of every hour. Updating every hour really interrupts the flow.

9. Are you getting tired yet?

Just nap time sleepy, I might fix a cup of tea.

10. Do you have any tips for other Readers or Cheerleaders, something you think is working well for you that others may not have discovered?

After you post your update and finish your hourly mini-challenges, turn off the monitor. Wear a watch. That way you can stay at your desk if you want to and read but not get constantly interrupted by glancing up at incoming twitter feeds/emails/comments until the next hour.

Hour 13

Wow, I really put my nose to the grindstone and finished Volume 5 of Fullmetal Alchemist. Finally getting some back story in on just what happened to get Edward and Alphonse where they are today. It’s about time! I’m glad I didn’t read the first five spaced out over two years, that would have been torture! Ready to pick up a different book for a while for a short break, I think!

I have done absolutely no reading this hour, but I wanted to post an update and take this chance to get caught up on mini-challenges! Then I think it’s back to Fullmetal Alchemist after all. I just have to know what happens next! Dinner was lovely and I really needed the break in a new room, with new food and seeing some actual people for a while! But now I think it’s back to reading for a while.

Mini Challenge Hour 13

You need to find a book that has a relationship that goes from friendship to love and and show the cover and advocate why it is awesomesauce. I chose Seaward by Susan Cooper.

After much searching I managed to find this book just off of the synopsis. I was so stoked to find this book again, I think I’m going to check it out of the library and re-read it. It was such a wonderful and amazing story. It was my introduction to a romance as a child, and I just loved it so much I still remember it after all these years.

The story is about two teens that have lost their parents and gotten separated and need to find their way to the sea to be reunited with them across treacherous terrain and mounting odds. The boy, West, is a child of the desert. The girl, Cally, is a child of the sea in more ways than one and has a secret she much hide or risk losing her freedom and perhaps her life. The way they grew from strangers working together, to slowly becoming friends, to realizing they were in love was so touching and wonderful.

I haven’t read this book in over 15 years and I still remember their story and even had songs that I considered “their” songs and I recognize them when they come on the radio to this day!

It was also one of my early introductions to another country’s legends (in the form of the legend of the selkie) and it definitely got me interested in reading other stories in a similar vein.

Susan Cooper is more well known for her The Dark is Rising series, and while that series is truly awesome that doesn’t make Seaward any less wonderful. You need to check it out!

Mini Challenge Hour 14

Pick a favorite book that you would like to have turned into a movie. Pick out who you would like to play one of the roles in the movie.

I would have to go with the hilarious story False Colours by Georgette Heyer. You know. If her estate didn’t specifically ban her works from ever being made into a movie ever again.

Christopher “Kit” Fancot knows that something has gone wrong. He and his twin brother Evelyn have always known when the other was in trouble, wounded or worse and Kit has a very strong feeling that something has happened to Evelyn. Kit lives abroad where he works for a diplomat but he comes home to England and arrives unannounced in the dead of night. It’s to find his mother in a desperate situation. His mother is in a huge amount of debt and his twin brother Evelyn has gone missing. Evelyn needs to be able to meet with his fiance Cressida Stavely’s family or risk having an elderly matron frown on the marriage of convenience (he wants to wind up his Trust, she wants to be free of her father and his new wife) and call the whole thing off. If Kit’s twin doesn’t marry, the family fortune won’t be made available to him, and their mother’s fantastic debts will lead to trouble for all involved.

That’s when his mother hits upon an idea he wishes she hadn’t. No one knows Kit is in town, so Kit can pose as Evelyn! For just one evening, she promises. In true Georgette Heyer style the crazy idea spawns yet more crazy and untenable circumstances that have Kit living in Evelyn’s shoes for far longer than he wishes to and results in him feeling more for his twin bother’s fiance than he really should.

As for who I would want to play the twins in this hilarious mix up. Um, hello? Who else? The twins that played Fred and George in the movies for the Harry Potter series! James and Oliver Phelps! Couldn’t you just picture them really shining and livening up a regency piece playing two very different twins with one very bird witted mother? It would be fantastic.

Hour 17

Didn’t get any reading done in Hour 16 either, ended up spending it getting caught up on mini-challenges and settling in for a night of reading. For Hour 17 I managed to read quite a bit and am well on my way through Volume 6 of Fullmetal Alchemist. It’s at a really good part so I made some decent progress. The night is young still, relatively, I’m hoping I can make it through!

Mini Challenges Hour 17

Talk about one of the first books you ever really loved.

Well at least one of them was The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

I got a copy somewhere between elementary school and junior high and just read it to ragged shreds.

I loved the characters, I loved the mysteries, I loved the stories, I loved everything!

And, they were the perfect length to read for the bus ride to and from school.

Next answer some questions about how you got ready for this read-a-thon.

1. What steps did you take to ensure you’d be able to read as much as possible today?

I started requesting books a week in advance to work on getting all 22 books in the manga series I wanted.
I made sure everyone in the house knew about the read-a-thon well in advance and I kept reminding them it was coming up so they wouldn’t plan things the day of, the night before, or the morning after.
I made lots and lots of read-a-thon buttons!
I got post templates set up and temporarily changed my WP to Twitter plugin to add the hashtag #readathon.

2. Of those steps, which proved to be the most beneficial to your day?

Turned out being so on top of it as to request a week in advance to get the books came in real handy. Three books got lost in the system, two books still haven’t showed over a week later, and I ended up requesting from over half a dozen libraries to assemble the collection as no one library had the whole thing (no, not just unavailable, they didn’t have it period).

3. Is there anything you might do differently next time?

FOOD. It is so important and there was none in the house this morning. I nearly starved!!! But, I had lots of books to keep me company at least.

Hour 18

I finished another book! I finished reading Fullmetal Alchemist Volume 6. I’m really back into the swing of things now. I haven’t been reading for solid chunks of time like this since the beginning. The two hour break for dinner did wonders! Now it’s on to Volume 7. I’ve switched from reading at my desk to reading laid out on the loveseat but I think it will be all good. Hopefully I won’t fall asleep!

Mini Challenges Hour 23

The first wants us to write about a cliffhanger in the current book we are reading. I’m going to do one better and just post the page. Fullmetal Alchemist by Hiromu Arakawa opens on this scene and then cuts away immediately after that last frame and doesn’t finish fleshing out that scene for five more volumes. So you start out by going OMG WTF kind of alchemy is that?! And, then don’t get your question answered for a long time. But so much else is filled in you stay along for the ride anyway!

Clicky to pop it big!

The next challenge wants us to answer some questions on how the read-a-thon has worked out for us so far.

Were you able to escape the hustle and bustle of life?

For the most part, yes! But, really I was able to do so much, much better after everyone went to bed.

Where did you do the majority of your reading?

In the chair in my office, with my legs up on my desk. Not as comfortable as it used to be, I think I’m actually wearing the padding on my chair thin because I tend to sit and read like that a lot.

Did you leave the house (or wherever you were) at any time during the challenge?

Just to do some quick grocery shopping in the morning and then to inspect the yard work being done by my husband. I didn’t know he could do such things without me there helping. Then again, what am I supposed to make of my husband choosing yard work over reading a book?

Hour 24

I might as well push to the end now, as best I can. I am almost there! Made some progress on volume 10. I might be able to finish it within the next hour. Who knows? I’m tired, I’m a little burnt out on Fullmetal Alchemist and just reading in general. And, I definitely am burnt out on the computer! After this I am going to sleep and tomorrow I am going to spend the whole day cleaning and doing yard work and not even thinking about the computer or books!

Wrap-Up Questions

1. Which hour was most daunting for you?

The ones where I got the least done and so worried I would not get back into the swing of things, the two hours I took for dinner.

2. Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year?

If you are at all into fairy tales I would recommend these YA fairy tale retellings:

Ice by Sarah Beth Durst

3. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year?

I already gave them in my mid-way point wrap-up.

4. What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon?

I like how you linked the winners for the mini-challenges on the main site, that way we don’t have to keep fifty million tabs open to keep track of what’s going on. It’s all in one place.

5. How many books did you read?

Ten, good chance of finishing number eleven soon.

6. What were the names of the books you read?

Fullmetal Alchemist Volumes 1-9 by Hiromu Arakawa
A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick

And that didn’t inspire readers whip lash at all! No siree! It so did.

7. Which book did you enjoy most?

Fullmetal Alchemist Volume 4 – it made me cry.

8. Which did you enjoy least?

Fullmetal Alchemist Volume 6 – it stayed unchanged from the anime to the manga. I thought it was a little cruel and unnecessary, and I was bored with reading that particular plot over again.

9. If you were a Cheerleader, do you have any advice for next year’s Cheerleaders?

N/A

10. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time?

I still want to be a reader, just do it differently next time. Fewer updates, but more food!

Finish

Guh! I am finished. I did manage to finish volume 10. I did manage to stay up for 24 hours. I did manage to finish this read-a-thon! And now, sleep. Lots and lots of blessed sleep! Thanks so much to the cheerleaders and commentors that cheered me on for this read-a-thon. I appreciate your kind words so, so, so much. You guys are all awesome! Thank you!

I keep trying to offload my easter candy but not many takers, so I may be consuming quite a bit of my own just to get rid of it…or at least that’s my excuse, not that I love chocolate. Looks like a great chair to be reading from…enjoy!

Congrats! You’re the winner of the Most Hated mini-challenge! I agree with you about Lydia and Wickham. Especially Lydia. She’s just an idiot and like you said, doesn’t even realize what she’s done! She’s proud of herself for getting married! I don’t know how Elizabeth keeps from killing her.
