Not Plug and Play

Annoyed
I have finally implemented the Winamp Hoverable Playlist over at Virtual Venus. It was a major stumbling block on my constuction of Ex Libris Bitsy for some time and so I got frustrated with it and went off to work on other sites for a time.
I looked over all of the documentation, all of the comments, the forum, and visited every trackback before being able to get it to finally work. It is this last I found doubly frustrating as most trackbacks ended up being three sentence entries to the tune of:
"I implemented this new thing. It's really cool. I rock."
What a waste of a ping. So I am going to have my trackback be a little more useful. Here are the issues I ran into, and how I fixed them, through means both fair and foul.
Issue One: I Can't Ping.
The tutorial reads that you are supposed to take the url for pinging your new category and and paste it in to this specially constucted url for the Do Something Plugin. I took this literally. A forum told me that I was being obtuse and that the tutorial clearly stated that there was an little step I overlooked.
You were supposed to convert this:
http://www.yousite.com/mt/mt-tb.cgi/xx
Into this:
http://www.yoursite.com/mt/mt-tb.cgi?tb_id=xx
So I did.
Issue Two: Overlib Isn't Working. Period.
Overlib has updated or something since this tutorial came out because there is some funky timeout thing coded into it so that people who are implementing this with new versions of Overlib aren't getting it to work. At all. I mean it isn't displaying anything.
The writer of the tutorial offered her copy to a girl who needed help but now her copy is password protected. I went to the girl's site instead and found that she still had her copy, so I ripped it. You too can now get it here.
Issue Three: I Upgraded To MT 3.0D. It Stopped Working!
Keep your MT 2.661 or whatever install and just leave your incoming.php and associated files on it. That's what I did. It's cheating, but I'll be damned if I don't have my hoverable playlist.
